Meet the Maker
This contribution comes from Instagram’s crochetlovingcelticghirl who describes herself there as an:
“Ageing teacher from the city, living in mid of nowhere, living the crafting way of life. I love my family, Celtic FC, crochet, my Bichon and a good cup of tea!”
She shared:
“So sad to hear Wink’s story. Depression is such a horrible illness, still misunderstood by too many people. Thoughts and prayers are with Wink’s family.”
Words by Wink
In October 2014, Wink went to a yarn fair and shared with us:
“I don’t know what the thing is about yarn fairs. I’m sure you’ve all been there: you want to go to the fair, but you tell yourself before you leave the house “I do not need more yarn. I’m just there for fun”. And when you get there, pretty much before you’ve seen everything, you’ve already made a list in your head, mapping out the exact position of vendors that caught your eye and the gorgeous yarns they stock that you absolutely cannot leave without. Sound familiar? 😉 Hi, my name is Wink and I’m a yarn addict…”
About Depression
I recently went to a new doctor so I had to talk about my experience of depression and when I listed my common symptoms I realized that chronic indecisiveness is definitely one of the symptoms of depression for me. When things get bad in the depression department, even trying to figure out what to eat or whether or not I want to see a movie can feel impossible.
We don’t really know why indecision is common during depression, but here are some possible reasons:
“One reason people with depression may be indecisive is that they lack motivation. Motivation is impaired in depression and without it, the rewards of making a decision are reduced. This may account for the slowness in decision-making as well.
Impaired decision-making in depression is thought to be a physical problem. One study has linked gray matter loss in the medial and ventral prefrontal cortex areas of the brain to reduced motivation and impaired decision-making ability. This gray matter loss is seen in people with depression.
Finally, people with depression also often exhibit a high degree of anxiety (and, in many cases, comorbid anxiety disorders) and this anxiety may also make it difficult to make decisions.”
HealthyPlace recommends CBT techniques for dealing with this issue. They also suggest working with positive self-talk and simplifying some decisions (eating the same breakfast every day for awhile, for example, instead of having to decide again every day).,
All contributions to Mandalas for Marinke are welcome and will help raise awareness about depression while honoring her work in the same way that this great contribution has done today. Details to join here.
