Beautiful Crochet Mandala

Brenda's Crochet Contribution to MandalasForMarinke

This enchanting mandala is a version of Wink’s standard crochet mandala pattern with some great additional variations. There is some surface crochet / embroidery that accents several of the rounds. And there is also terrific short fringe that adds a pop of fun and color.

Brenda says that this crochet mandala was made in memory of Marinke, created in Ireland and posted on holiday in the USA, and she shares that “the yarns represent our feelings – Sometimes we are dull, or bright (neon even). We can feel fuzzy (pink) or sparkly (blue)!”

Wink said of Scheepjes Soft Fun Denim Yarn

“It’s variegated, but it’s very subtle and just so… Chique! I love all of these colours together! 🙂 To me, it inspires feelings of France; think bohemian chique, lace, ribbons, shell buttons, strolling along bistro’s in your favourite pair of strappy sandals…”

About Depression

Brenda's Crochet Contribution to MandalasForMarinke from Ireland

One purpose of this project is to raise awareness about depression so each post will end with some facts, thoughts or quotes about depression, suicide and/or mental health. Today I wanted to talk about treatment-resistant depression, which affects someone I’m close to and it’s such a really difficult condition to live with.

As the name says, this is depression that doesn’t lift with treatment. For most of us, some combination of medication, lifestyle changes and therapy helps with depression to at least some degree. With treatment-resistant depression, these strategies either don’t work or only work for a really short period of time and then the depression comes back unrelentingly.

Some options for treatment-resistant depression include:

  • ECT, which some people consider controversial but is arguably the best option in this situation. TMS/ rTMS are other related options.
  • CBT / DBT therapy rather than psychoanalysis or talk therapy
  • More intensive medication options including new drug therapies and new combinations of drugs; many people who have no results with SSRIs can see moderate success with other drug options
  • Ketamine infusions, which is currently an area of research
  • Acceptance that this is a chronic condition; spiritual practice

All contributions to Mandalas for Marinke are welcome and will help raise awareness about depression while honoring her work in the same way that this great contribution has done today. Details to join hereLooking for a crochet mandala pattern? – here are Wink’s and here are 40 more!
