Today’s colorful contribution to the Mandalas for Marinke remembrance art project comes to us from 54-year-old depression survivor Kathryn Olson. I’m pretty sure it’s one of the Sophie crochet mandala patterns by Dedri Uys.

Kathryn writes:

Depression makes you feel like:

– the only square on a wall of circles

– all of your differences are faults

– that you have nothing good to offer.

Depression robs you of the ability to see how beautiful you really are!

There are many different resilience factors for working with and overcoming depression. One that has been researched that I find so, so, so valuable is self-compassion! Depression itself makes this trait difficult but I found that when I was able to get gentler with myself about my feelings, it was easier to handle my depressive periods and therefore to work through them more quickly.
