Christina's Crochet MandalasForMarinke + Golden Gate Bridge Suicides

These two pretty crochet mandalas come to us from Christina here in California. I love the way the white interspersed between the variegated pastels really adds lightness to the larger of the two mandalas. On the smaller one I love the little bit of sparkle along with the surface crochet detail.

I am almost certain that there was no letter included with this one. However, it was one of the few that got mixed up in the mess when I first got rescue pup Katara, so it’s possible that there’s a letter here somewhere. If one turns up, I’ll be sure to update and re-post! In the meantime, let’s enjoy these mandalas.

I also wanted to share that I’ve just started reading the book Guardian of the Golden Gate: Protecting the Line Between Hope and Despair by Kevin Briggs.

He was an officer who worked the bridge for many years. The bridge is, unfortunately, a “suicide destination”, and he often worked in the role of identifying people who might be considering suicide and helping them decide to live another day.

The book is about that experience and seems like it is going to have some powerful, inspiring stories about coming back from the brink of suicide. So far I’ve only read a little bit about it, mostly the history of the bridge itself, which I didn’t know included suicide from even the earliest days.

There has long been controversy about whether or not to add a “suicide net” to the bridge to prevent jumping and reduce the spot’s use for this macabre purpose. The project is going forward after many years of debate. The officer shares in the beginning of the book that he never had a strong opinion about it but was generally on the side of not having the net, until a poignant conversation with the father of someone whose daughter jumped changed his mind.
