These two pretty crochet mandalas come to us from Cai, who can be found on Pinterest @craftysillymama, for the Mandalas for Marinke remembrance project, which she calls, “a beautiful project to raise awareness for those struggling with or caring about someone with depression”.
A number of celebrities have opened up about their mental health struggles, which I think is terrific, because it allows others to see that no matter how successful you may be, depression and related issues can infect your life. Wentworth Miller (famous for his role on Prison Break) is one voice who has shared his story. Recently, he discusses a fat shaming meme that came out about him; he gained weight due to depression and was mocked for it in the media. I love where he writes:
“In 2010, fighting for my mental health, it was the last thing I needed.
Long story short, I survived.
So do those pictures.
I’m glad.
Now, when I see that image of me in my red t-shirt, a rare smile on my face, I am reminded of my struggle. My endurance and my perseverance in the face of all kinds of demons. Some within. Some without.
Like a dandelion up through the pavement, I persist.
Anyway. Still. Despite.
The first time I saw this meme pop up in my social media feed, I have to admit, it hurt to breathe. But as with everything in life, I get to assign meaning. And the meaning I assign to this/my image is Strength. Healing. Forgiveness.
Of myself and others.”
Powerful.
