Monica's Crochet Mandala for Wink

This contribution to Mandalas for Marinke comes from Monica, a 50+ female who says “I lost my job, 4+ months out of work, crochet saved my mind! This piece is Day at the Lake.” She shares,

“I was trolling the Internet and found Wink’s website. I was touched by her openness to talk about who she is and what was important to her in Life. I did not realize she was fighting mental illness. I have worked in mental health 20+ years and am frustrated how little progress has been made; the best things have been grassroots movements and peer support.

I find crocheting to be peaceful, inspiring, creative and loving. I can extend pieces of crochet to people I love, acquaintances, holidays, birthdays or just a “piece” of encouragement. Depression is so tough; medication helps some, exercise can help.

My father had bipolar disorder and committed suicide at age 77. My son had 4 DUIs and spent time in jail. My first husband was controlling and anger undercurrent. It is everywhere and touches so many lives. Everyone who is helped and healed through needlearts is a blessing. It can be a way to say, “take care of yourself first”.

She also shares a message for Wink’s family,

“I am so sorry for your loss. I can’t even imagine. Wink inspired me and many, many other people. I loved her colors, simple design, easy to use directions and inspiration about her life and values. It was as if she were talking to me! I wish you all the best; peace and comfort. Her days counted and made a difference. I made my first mandala because of Wink.”
