Beautiful Crochet Mandala

Kat's Crochet Contribution to Mandalas for Marinke

This gorgeous crochet mandala is rich in rounds of purple separated by vibrant neons and polished off with a round of variegated yarn at the edge. A wonderful tribute to Wink’s love of color!

Meet the Maker

Kat's Crochet Contribution to Mandalas for Marinke

This pretty purple crochet mandala comes to us from Kat Belliveau in Hudson, MA, “an avid crocheter, quilter, all around crafter and systems engineer”. She shares:

I am always inspired by creative people sharing their ideas, their passion, and their positive light with the world, and Wink was no exception. She was incredibly creative, and colorful and for me her blogs and patterns brought great joy and excitement!

Although I never met Wink in person, I felt connected to Wink because she shared many of my interest, including crocheting (of course) and also photography. I loved seeing her photographs as much as her new creations! I only wish I had found her blog earlier and could have shared in her world for longer. I hope she knew how much positive influence she had on the world.”

Words by Wink

In February 2013, Wink shared what health meant to her:

“Even though I hardly ever work out I feel pretty healthy overall. I watch what I eat, I make sure there’s a healthy meal on the table every night and I don’t have a car so I do everything on foot or on my bicycle. But of course there is more to feeling healthy besides a steady diet and exercise; listening or making music for instance always makes me feel great no matter what!”

About Depression

Kat's Crochet Contribution to Mandalas for Marinke

One purpose of this project is to raise awareness about depression so each post will end with some facts, thoughts or quotes about depression, suicide and/or mental health. I thought I’d share some more definitions of health today.

The World Health Organization says, “Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” And has added, “Mental health is defined as a state of well-being in which every individual realizes his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to her or his community.”

That’s a good starting point but its controversial and many people say that this definition, from 1948, is outdated or incomplete. One argument being: “In the face of an ageing global population with an increasing burden of chronic disease, it “minimises the role of the human capacity to cope autonomously with life’s ever changing physical, emotional, and social challenges and to function with fulfilment and a feeling of wellbeing with a chronic disease or disability.””

The CDC says: “A healthy community as described by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Healthy People 2010 report is one that continuously creates and improves both its physical and social environments, helping people to support one another in aspects of daily life and to develop to their fullest potential. Healthy places are those designed and built to improve the quality of life for all people who live, work, worship, learn, and play within their borders — where every person is free to make choices amid a variety of healthy, available, accessible, and affordable options.”

We are increasingly recognizing that health is about what happens inside us as well as what happens around us and that it exists on a number of different levels at the same time, changing throughout our lives.

All contributions to Mandalas for Marinke are welcome and will help raise awareness about depression while honoring her work in the same way that this great contribution has done today. Details to join here.
