Here is the next of the beautiful, inspiring, special contributions coming in to the #MandalasForMarinke remembrance project. I am grateful for each and every amazing contribution. You are invited to join; learn more here.

Beautiful Crochet Mandala

corinne crochet mandala

This crochet mandala is made using Wink’s free crochet mandala pattern for the standard 12-round mandala. It’s worked in terrific colors of teal, orange, yellow, green and white. I love this five-color combo that has no specific pattern repeat. The white brings lightness to the piece. The orange and yellow add a nod to a retro feel. And the teal is bold and bright.

Meet the Maker

This crochet mandala comes to us from Corinne in England. You may know her online as cozamundo. I’ve featured her in my Instagram posts many times, writing about her: “I love the images where she places crochet work off-center in photos against wooden floors and the images with close-up detail of her great crochet texture worked in deep, vibrant colors. Corinne is a UK-based crafter who also has a Folksy shop.”

Words by Wink

Wink made many crochet mandalas over the years using this pattern. She wrote on 8/5/12,

“There’s something very comforting about creating something using only colors and rounds of dc’s.”

In that same post, she was excited because she had just come from a visit with family members who lived in a working windmill. She wrote:

“I really envy them. The windmill is in working condition and my uncle is the one responsible for keeping it running. We got a tour when we arrived and went all the way up in the windmill, to where all the ‘guts’ of the mill are. I was surprised to learn that most parts are made of wood, and they use different kinds of wood for different parts, so for instance they use wood that doesn’t split, or wood that can sustain large amounts of pressure. It was really impressive to see the inside! Man my family rocks.”

Wink was always writing about her family, celebrating their creativity and craftiness and sharing her love for them.

About Depression

crochet mandala by cozamundo

One purpose of this project is to raise awareness about depression so each post will end with some facts, thoughts or quotes about depression, suicide and/or mental health. I wanted to expand on something I wrote a few days ago about how there are many different types of depression.

In terms of diagnosis, even a fairly “straightforward” diagnosis of major depression can be categorized as mild, moderate or severe and may have additional features that are psychotic, melancholic, mixed or atypical. Depression may also be accompanied by anxious distress or catatonia. And it may be associated with seasonal changes, peripartum onset.

In addition to major depression (short term issue) and persistent depression (long term issue), there are other types of depression listed in the DMV including recurrent brief depression, short-duration depressive episode (less than two weeks), and depressive episode with insufficient symptoms to meet the full criteria of major depression.

The point here is that depression doesn’t look the same in one person as it does in another. The same individual may experience different types of depression over the course of a lifetime. And different types of depression may require different types or levels of treatment. If you or someone you love struggles with depression, educate yourself.

All contributions to Mandalas for Marinke are welcome and will help raise awareness about depression while honoring her work in the same way that this great contribution has done today. Details to join here.
