Beautiful Crochet Mandalas

Lynne's Crochet Contribution to Mandalas for Marinke

Lynne made two beautiful crochet mandalas, one using the standard 12-round free crochet mandala pattern by Wink and one using her own crochet pattern. The standard mandala incorporates shades of blue and purple as well as pink, red and orange, for a colorful fruit salad of beauty. Her own mandala is a floral design with beautiful bright greens throughout.

Meet the Maker

Lynne's Crochet Contribution to Mandalas for Marinke

These crochet contributions come to us from Lynne of Da’s Crochet Connection. She shared the message:

When I came back to crochet a few years ago, I came across A Creative Being blog and was inspired by Wink’s fresh new designs. I was used to the old style of crochet from years ago, and she made me look at crochet in a new way. Thank you Wink, for sharing your love of crochet with others. You will be greatly missed. I will always think of you as the Crochet Mandala Queen.”

Words by Wink

If you’ve looked at the crochet pattern for Wink’s standard mandala, you’ll see that even though it’s a beginner crochet pattern featuring only dc stitches, it uses a few advanced techniques – the magic circle, the invisible join and the standing dc stitch. In Wink’s post from 8/27/12, she shares some mandala crochet tips and explains these things. She says, “always use an invisible join instead of a slip stitch. When making circles in crochet, using a slip stitch to join can become real ugly real fast… But when you use an invisible join, the ugliness disappears!” And she adds, “instead of starting your rounds with a slip stitch to attach the new color, you can also start with a standing stitch; making it impossible to spot where you began the round! And at the end of the round, join with an invisible join and voila, no more slip stitches making your crocheted beauty ugly!”

About Depression

Lynne's Crochet Contribution to Mandalas for Marinke

One purpose of this project is to raise awareness about depression so each post will end with some facts, thoughts or quotes about depression, suicide and/or mental health. Did you know that major depression often co-occurs with other illnesses?

The Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance reports that depression co-exists with:

  • 25% of cancer patients
  • 10–27% of post-stroke patients
  • 50–75% of eating disorder patients (anorexia and bulimia)
  • 27% of individuals with substance abuse disorders (both alcohol and other substances)
  • 8.5–27% of persons with diabetes.

And the Canadian Mental Health Association adds that it co-exists with heart disease, Parkinson’s, dementia and multiple sclerosis.

And of course depression can co-exist with other mental health issues as well, including autism spectrum issues.
