Here is the next of the beautiful, inspiring, special contributions coming in to the #MandalasForMarinke remembrance project. I am grateful for each and every amazing contribution.
Tomorrow is the deadline for this project! If you absolutely can’t meet that deadline but want to participate, please email me at kathryn.vercillo (gmail).
Beautiful Crochet Mandalas
Seven terrific crochet mandalas, each one more vibrant than the last! I can’t pick a favorite.
Meet the Maker
This great contribution comes from Ayse Balci in New York who crocheted them in loving memory of wonderful Wink.
Words by Wink
Last year Wink shared a piece of jewelry given to her and said:
“My mom gifted me this beautiful necklace because ‘you make such beautiful things’. I love her <3″
About Depression
One purpose of this project is to raise awareness about depression so each post ends with some facts, thoughts or quotes about depression, suicide and/or mental health. Today I want to share the photos of depression from fellow struggler Edward Honaker.
His photos are a series of self portraits depicting what it feels like to live with depression. A HuffPo article on his work shares:
“Honaker hopes his project will inspire others to not only have a conversation about mental illness, but push them to be more accepting of those who struggle with it. “When I was making the portfolio, I asked myself if I was the kind of person whom others would feel comfortable coming to if they were going through a difficult time and needed someone to talk to,” he explained. “Truthfully, at the time, I don’t think I was. I’ve still got quite a ways to go, but the whole experience made me a lot more patient and empathetic towards others.”
Honaker journals at Tumblr. He can also be found on Instagram.
Here are some other artists with self-portraits of depression and other mental health issues:
- Christian Hopkins (major depression)
- Katie Joy Crawford (depression and anxiety)
- Deedra Baker’s Psychological Self-Portrait (depression)
- Aleksandra Stone (depression after a friend’s death)
- Josephine King (bipolar)
- Kyle Thompson (dark emotions)
- Laura Hospes (photo series in psychiatric hospital after suicide attempt)
All contributions to Mandalas for Marinke are so appreciated. They help raise awareness about depression while honoring her work in the same way that this great contribution has done today.
