Beautiful Crochet Mandala

Vicki's Crochet Contribution to Mandalas for Marinke

I love this large, lacy, openwork floral crochet mandala. It’s brilliant in both color and design. I love how the chains leave open spaces and the layers of double crochet create shapes. Perfection.

Meet the Maker

Vicki's Crochet Contribution to Mandalas for Marinke

This gorgeous crochet mandala comes to us from Vicki Morley in Australia who writes:

“I am terribly saddened by the passing of Marinke. I didn’t know her but have read Crochet Saved My Life and provided crochet hooks, wool and patterns to young people that I teach who sadly cannot overcome their personal battles with depression. It’s a widespread health problem that unfortunately still comes attached with social stigma.

Much love to her family and friends; support each other.”

Words by Wink

Vicki's Crochet Contribution to Mandalas for Marinke

Many of you know that Wink was the designer of the 2014 ScheepjesCAL. What you might not know is that Scheejeswol first provided her with yarn support for her seal yarn bomb. She shared:

“The people from Scheepjeswol are incredibly nice and they gave me a tour of the premises. It was ‘wool-halla’ for me; there were isles upon isles stacked to the roof with yarn! I could hardly believe my eyes. Everywhere you looked there were amazing things to be seen, like of course lots and lots of yarn, but also haberdashery like buttons, needles, bag handles – you name it! I had a blast while I was there, and the best part was that I got to take home a fair amount of yarn for my seal yarn bomb project.”

About Depression

Vicki's Crochet Contribution to Mandalas for Marinke

One purpose of this project is to raise awareness about depression so each post will end with some facts, thoughts or quotes about depression, suicide and/or mental health.

Yarnbomber YarnArtisan shared:

“Crochet is one of my ways of staying well and is a form of meditation and mindfullness and relaxation and creativity that feeds my soul. It lead to my joining a local yarn-bombing group and has really helped me through some tough times. We are an anonymous group who install under cover of darkness and take down in the dark , so it’s a bit magical.

I know when I was approached to join the group and went on to research on the internet it made me laugh and filled me with such hope and happiness. It continues to do so 3 years down the track and I just wanted to share that with others.”

So it’s not just crochet that helps heal people but also related creative acts like yarnbombing. In this case, the health benefits derive from the crafting and the creativity itself but also the community that is a part of the process.

All contributions to Mandalas for Marinke are welcome and will help raise awareness about depression while honoring her work in the same way that this great contribution has done today. Details to join here.
